Jan's Columns

After a 1990's guest opinion piece attracted reader attention, the Battle Creek Enquirer encouraged Jan to continue submitting opinion pieces. Several times she was recognized as the best opinion writer of the month and more than once, has been called the paper's "most popular non-staff writer." It was this reaction from readers which led to the publication in late 2003 of, From My Perspective, a collection of some of readers' favorite columns.

Columns which generate the most reader response are those having to do with our relationships to one another, the earth, and most of all, to our pets. In 2006, when Jan wrote about the death of her dog and horses, letters, email, cards and calls poured in from readers across the country who understood the pain of parting with a beloved pet and grieved with her.
